Linda has so kindly offered to drive and will be leaving early on the 22nd. Be sure to add a comment if you are interested in going up then. Please start adding comments to this post, or add a new post, with your intentions for travel and date of arrival. The next two weeks will fly by.
Questions were posed on what to bring...
Clothing -- It will be warm during the day and very cool at night. I'd recommend a jacket, umbrella or raincoat (depending on the forecast), and layered clothing. It will get hot, too. Some of the session rooms were uncomfortably warm. And, of course, comfortable shoes. If you are the "get up early for a run"-type, the trails and walking paths are beautiful in the morning. Some people take their mountain bikes up with them.
Hardware -- I brought my laptop, ipod, cell, power strip, Flip digital camcorder, a basket full of chargers and cables, microphone/webcam, headphones, and padfolio (an organizer for all the handouts.) Basically, I take an entire A/V studio with me wherever I go. Be sure to take a flashdrive -- many presenters don't have everything uploaded to the TIE site, but will give you their presentation files, support files, and handouts.I take all my notes on Google Docs -- saves time, paper, and bulk. If you will be using Google Docs (not shsfalcons), you may want to download Google Gears so your notes will auto-update should you not have wireless in any session. If you don't know what that is, ask me when we are in Copper. I bring my personal laptop; last year, some people brought their school laptops and were unable to download anything that needed access to the hard drive.
Food -- I admit...I'm cheap (I like to call it frugal) and bring all my food. There's a few meals provided, but we are on our own the rest of the time. I bring fruit, beverages, coffee/cream, breakfast items, and things to make easily for quick dinners (lunches are provided.) I do like to bring a bottle of wine and a six-pack of a Belgian wheat for viewing incredible sunsets from the deck. Hey...this is a vacation and an opportunity for some reflection, right?
Is anyone interested in an Italian potluck one of the evenings (Tuesday or Wednesday)? I'm thinking about making a cioppino and homemade gnocchi w/ lemon garlic sauce and/or a fresh tomato basil sauce. If so, here's the place to add your contribution for the dinner. We'll need the usual fare: insalata and/or antipasti, primo e secondi corso (meat and pasta), pane (bread), and some sort of dolce finale. Depending on what you like, I think that a complementary vino is in order, too...at least a couple of bottles. Generally, the kitchens are equipped with tableware, dishware, and cookware. They also have coffee pots.If it is okay with everyone, I'd like to invite the new District Director of Instructional Technology to our potluck. ...a good way to welcome him to SVVSD, create a connection, and covertly bend his ear on what technology support is needed in the trenches. I would also like to extend an invitation to the new teacher librarian for Skyline (can't give any details yet) -- she won't be able to attend TIE, but may consider a dinner invitation. She'll be in Keystone during that time. Anyone else?
Next post idea? ...talking about the sessions we plan to attend? ...finalize the carpooling. ...just chatter about nothing in particular?
I'll go up the morning of the 23rd. I am willing to drive and pick up anybody who wants to arrive that morning.
ReplyDeleteAlso, do all the rooms have kitchenettes? Who is rooming with whom? Are all the rooms together?
Your Italian menu sounds delicioso! I can bring the insalata. :)
All the condos have full kitchens.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure who is in each room except that Ben and John are in a room. I imagine the rest of us will be placed at random.
I was told that we would all be in Center Village. I requested that all the condos be in the Copper One building. There is no guarantee, however. They wanted an exorbitant surcharge to ensure that we would all be in Copper One.
As long as you arrive early enough before the first session starts, you can leave food items in my refrigerator and stash all your gear in my room until the 4pm check-in time.
My wine cellar has some wonderful reds, so will bring the vino! Think the invite to the head man and the new teacher librarian is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteMyra, I was distracted last night by the Lakers and Magic and did not finish my post. I would love to learn the art of gnocchi. If I provide the potatoes, would you teach me? We should also set a date to shop, as I also want to take food and drink. What about water, should we take a case of bottled?
